Pathé Schouwburgplein is a cinema in the centre of Rotterdam and built-in 1995. The design was made by Koen van Velzen with 7 cinemas, 1 of which IMAX and has 2722 seats.
The cinema is built on the existing parking garage under the square. The roof construction of the garage was constructed too light to bear the load of the car, so West 8 designed the square as an elevated (play) field.

Commissioned by Pathé, we designed and carried out various modifications and extensions to the cinema.

The façade, dating from 1995, had lost its freshness over the years and suffered from pollution and damage. In 2018, Koen van Velsen made a design for the renovation of the facade. We have contributed to the concept of this design and have developed the design in a technical construction team and have been involved in the implementation. The corrugated sheets on the outside have been replaced by double-walled polycarbonate elements. The concept of the building; cinemas held together by tape are made clearer by showing the halls as closed volumes by finishing them with stucco.

The fire safety concept of the original building was based on the limited presence of combustible materials in the foyer. This principle hindered the exploitation. In 2017, with DGMR as a consultant, we designed the fitting in of a sprinkler system in the foyer and made the technical elaboration and then supervised its construction.

In 2016 the expansion on the north side; with the construction of the connecting tunnel between the Kruispleingarage and the Schouwburgpleingarage, the entrance to the garage that was under the cinema could be removed. In consultation with and partly on behalf of the municipality, we designed an extension that included 3 program components. These are;
A catering area in front of/at the cinema with associated storage. This significantly improved the appearance of the cinema on the main walking route into the city. The interior for the day café was designed by Conceptional.
Also an expedition entrance and elevator for the cinema. This made it easier for waste containers to be emptied and they are no longer on the street. Suppliers no longer have to deliver via the square and it was possible to make better use of storage space.
The municipality wanted to create a good, spacious entrance for the users of the Schouwburgplein garage, in which the stairs and lift could be easily found.
With the arrival of the new entrance, one of the stair objects in the middle of the square and the lift between the cinema and the Calypso building could be removed. Both objects obstructed the view or the passage. It was the wish of the municipality and stakeholders around the square to replace the triangular superstructures of the emergency exits of the garage with hydraulically opening floor hatches. These have been incorporated into the square in consultation with West 8.
The toilets on this side of the cinema have also been renovated.
