Central Gardens

Location: Arnhem

Phase: Initiative plan

Commissioned by Epicurus and Van Wijnen, we made a design for the location east of Arnhem Central station on Oude Stationsstraat. The rear sides of buildings and yard fences determined the atmosphere here. Program is a multi-storey apartment complex with a commercial plinth.

The preconditions as formulated in the urban development plan of UN studio, as well as the zoning plan, have been used as the basis for the main design and design. The urban development volume seeks connection with the adjacent buildings, the difference in height at ground level is absorbed by making the plinth higher.

The double-height plinth, which is prominently oriented towards the station, has a catering establishment.
In the higher floors, 64 apartments have been designed with various layouts and sizes. The volume decreases in height in an easterly direction.

By applying apartments with varying depth, "places" are created on the gallery, more privacy is created for residents and the elongated character of the building is nuanced.

The roofs located next to the apartments have a green design. Here, green "rooms" are created in the roof gardens, which are allocated to part of the apartments as private outdoor space.

The roof gardens create a pleasant atmosphere and also contribute to hotspot reduction (the phenomenon of heat accumulation in inner cities).
